Copenhagen is honored to be nominated as one of the eight destinations for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Tour. 14 divers travel around to different destinations around the world and cliff dive from 30 meters high into the ocean.
You might remember being scared to jump the 5-meter board at your local swimming pool, but you felt proud and accomplished when you finally did it. If you were really brave you ventured to try and jump off the 10 meter diving board, but I bet you have never jumped off from 30 meters off the ground, and for good reasons. Cliff diving from 30 meters high means that you hit the water with an average speed of 85km/h, so it is best left to the professionals.
Denmark’s lack of mountains and powerful rivers limits the amount of extreme sports people are exposed to. So the fact that there is a Cliff Diving event here in Copenhagen is thrilling. The participants jump off the roof of The Opera House and into the harbor water. The jump is about 27 meters high and, it is worth repeating, crash into the water at 85km/h. The divers have no protection gear so it requires a lot to training and body control. It is imperative that they crash into the water correctly.
The competitors also dive in France, Portugal, Italy, USA, England, Brazil and host their final event in Thailand. It is a big sports event, and in my opinion, much more exciting than the average tennis or football match. On top of that, it is also an excellent excuse to get some sun.
The event is free so all you have to do is show up. Word of advice, if you want a great place with a perfect view, get there well in advance and bring water, sunscreen and food, because you will be there for a while.
