I have bungee jumped in Vancouver (Canada), in Cancun (Mexico) and right here in Copenhagen. I have to be honest with you, the most intense bungee jump so far has been in Copenhagen.
Bungee jumping started as a weird part of a breakup ritual. The first time was in Mexico after I had been dumped by my first true love at 17. My best friend at that time suggested I travel somewhere exciting to distract my mind, so we planned a single-ladies trip to Cancun. As if traveling to Cancun was not distracting enough, my friend went on to suggest bungee jumping. I believe her exact words were ‘it will make you feel more alive than that jerk ever did’. So long story short, ever since then my friend persuades me to include a crazy bungee jump as part of my breakup.
So if we fast forward to Copenhagen, you understand now why I was reserving my jump online. I managed to convince a friend to jump as well and we both biked over to Refshalevej (8 minutes bike ride away from Christiania). It is also possible to take bus 40 to Refshaleøen end station, and then walk 500 meters to where the jump takes place. We walked towards a small booth where we checked in, left all our important belongings and payed for our jump. The jump is 550kr and you can get the second jump for only 250kr, and you pay cash or by Dankort (no foreign money or card). It is important to note that if you decide not to jump, you will not get your money back.
Our guide introduced himself and explained how the whole thing would playout and then sorted us out with a harness. You might be wondering how exactly you can bungee jump in Copenhagen when there are no skyscrapers, mountains or cliffs, well the Danes managed to figure it out.
You and your guide step onto a platform that gets elevated by what I can only describe as a huge crane, and slowly but surely you begin to gather a lot of height. In a matter of seconds, you reach a height of 69 meters. The view is breathtakingly gorgeous. You overlook the Copenhagen harbor and see the city from a the most perfect angle. The view actually managed to get me to relax for a second, but my peacefulness was interrupted when my guide said ‘alright, now that we have enjoyed the view, it is time to jump’.
In a mark to commemorate my 25 years I decided to do something "quietly" without much fanfare. There were no butterflies heading up nor was I afraid to step out to the unknown. Still, the pressure forced a long dragged out cathartic scream. Before I knew it I was hanging upside down with blood rushing through my head as I tried to re-orientate myself. Finally I heard a voice to tug onto the rope that was preventing my fall to eternal doom, and then someone caught me. I did contemplate doing it again and I would if I had the money at that time, but at that moment I know why they see adrenaline is addicting
His arms, which had been wrapped around my waist, let go of me and he asked me to please lean forward. I leaned forward so I was basically in a superman position with my body in midair, but with my feet still on the platform. He was still somehow holding me and he promised not to let go of me until I was ready, so for a few seconds, I simply ‘hung out’, enjoyed the view and felt the cool breeze on my face. The guide asked if I was ready, to which my immediate answer was ‘NO!’, and then he suggested a countdown from 5 to 0, to which I agreed to. From seconds 5 through 1 I felt my heart raise up to my throat and out of my chest, and then before my mind even had a chance to process what was happening, I was falling.
The sensation is indescribable. All I can say is that you will feel very alive and incredibly happy. Contrary to what you may have heard, there is absolutely no pain, the elasticity of the wire makes the bounce very smooth and painless. You bounce a few times before you simply begin to swing from side to side, at which point they start to lower you down until you reach a foam mat at the floor.
It is the perfect experience for those who love adrenaline. Before you reserve your jump, know that you have to be at least 14 years of age (those under 18 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian), and you have to weigh a minimum of 45 kg
You will not be allowed to jump if:
- You weigh more than 135 kg
- You are pregnant
- You are under the influence of alcohol or strong prescription medication
- You have epilepsia
- You have a heart condition
